This is called Little Pidgin and yes there is a Big Pidgin. Last time we visited we found turtle scratchings and a turtle's nest just near the boat.
The mountains in the background are two of the volcanoes on the mainland and are called Tavurvur (active) and Mother (dormant).
Is the active volcano the one that erupted a few years ago and caused so much mayhem? It looks such a peaceful place. "Foreign Correspondent", on Ch 2 last night, had a fascinating story on Mts Vesuvious and Stromboli, in Italy, and the liklihood of future eruptions.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jules. Honestly, your photos bring tears to my eyes. I just love that place so much - I was so lucky to grow up there - my childhood was spent up a tree or in the sea! LOL! I went diving off the Pidgins with Steve when I was up last Sept - I had forgotten just how beautiful the reef was - I didn't know where to look first; turtles, sharks, huge schools of barracuda or, Steve's favourite, the fluorescent, fluffy little nudibranchs.
ReplyDeleteThis will be my last comment for a while - I get packed out tomorrow and fly out next week to Beijing. I'll catch up soon with some news as an expat again.
Jules, This is a lovely scene. Looks pretty peaceful.
ReplyDeleteJules, this is a very serene scene, quite nice, and I bet it's pretty warm too.
ReplyDeleteSouth Shields Daily Photo

ReplyDeleteLaura - all the best with the move. Keep in touch!!!!
kate & curly - yes it is as nice and as warm as it looks. It is also surrounded by fabulous corals and fish too!!!!
Just watched a documentary on New Guinea... this blog really makes me want to go visit :-) Thanks for sharing.

ReplyDeletePlanet Earth Daily Photo.
love pidgin island so much.. always a great day when we go over.
ReplyDeletevery nice photo too.
erin xx.
Very interesting photos and story behind the photo. These names played a big role in World War II and those areas must be filled with artifacts from that time. I have many times heard these names during the war years.
ReplyDeleteI live in rabaul but am away at school and seeing home every day is so wonderful. I swim at that beach all the time when at home and I miss it so much. Great job
ReplyDeleteHi Erin & Maddie - so glad these photos make home seem closer!!!
ReplyDeleteAbraham - yes these islands are full of amazing WWII sites and artifacts - stay tuned as I will have lots to post.
I can see why someone would want to go here. Looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteDespite the threat of eruptions this seems to be paradise on earth!
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful is this! Looks live heaven to me and your placement of that boat is the work of an artist!
ReplyDeleteNo matter what others say, I think I shall simply take up residence around about here and stay for the long haul. you couldn't get better than this, anywhere.
ReplyDeleteNow there's a nice uncrowded beach! :) Are the beaches usually that empty?
ReplyDeleteThat looks like an idea place for a quiet vacation.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Jules and the red boat sets off the scene. The mountains are stunning as a backdrop.
ReplyDeleteThanks you all for your comments.
ReplyDeleteYes if you get off the mainland it is just usually you and the beach. When you go out on the boat it is as if you are the only people on the planet.
The beach in front of my place has people on it on the wekends but we walk on the beach every sunset - be prepared for lots of sunset posts - and it is usually very quiet.
You are all invited to stay!!!
