This post is for Laura who used to live in Rabaul and loved visiting Pidgin Island.This is called Little Pidgin and yes there is a Big Pidgin. Last time we visited we found turtle scratchings and a turtle's nest just near the boat.
The mountains in the background are two of the volcanoes on the mainland and are called Tavurvur (active) and Mother (dormant).
Is the active volcano the one that erupted a few years ago and caused so much mayhem? It looks such a peaceful place. "Foreign Correspondent", on Ch 2 last night, had a fascinating story on Mts Vesuvious and Stromboli, in Italy, and the liklihood of future eruptions.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Jules. Honestly, your photos bring tears to my eyes. I just love that place so much - I was so lucky to grow up there - my childhood was spent up a tree or in the sea! LOL! I went diving off the Pidgins with Steve when I was up last Sept - I had forgotten just how beautiful the reef was - I didn't know where to look first; turtles, sharks, huge schools of barracuda or, Steve's favourite, the fluorescent, fluffy little nudibranchs.

cabacurl - yes this one and another across the bay called Vulcan. I missed the program but we live under the constant threat of eruptions. we had a big one last october - see July 4 post - wasn't pleasant!!!!

Very interesting photos and story behind the photo. These names played a big role in World War II and those areas must be filled with artifacts from that time. I have many times heard these names during the war years.
ReplyDeleteI live in rabaul but am away at school and seeing home every day is so wonderful. I swim at that beach all the time when at home and I miss it so much. Great job

ReplyDeleteYes if you get off the mainland it is just usually you and the beach. When you go out on the boat it is as if you are the only people on the planet.
The beach in front of my place has people on it on the wekends but we walk on the beach every sunset - be prepared for lots of sunset posts - and it is usually very quiet.
