Takubar Beach is.
The top photo is the view from Rapopo Resort, next door, across the bay to Rabaul and the volcanoes. This photo was taken by a friend Martin who was a volunteer doctor working at the hospital, and is now living back in Germany.
The bottom photo is a view of Takubar beach and my house. The resort is just out of view on the left of the photo. Will take some more photos of it when I go down there this afternoon to have a drink with a friend. Look at my previous post Croquet Anyone? that was also taken at the resort

Hi Jules, The G remembers the beach and i remember Rapopo Pltn though I don't think I ever visited there. It was one of the Burns Philip stable of plantations. G says they must have sold it for a good price or developed it to good purpose. Takubar may have also been a last bastion of white planter privilege too. Is there surf there in the later half of the year when the wind blows on-shore? If yes then in all likelihood I've been there. And Karlis: who ever worried about sharks in such a paradise, no one I knew got taken.
ReplyDeleteAre you and non blogger teachers? I'm a retired chalky and taught in Lae for one year, 1974, before leaving to have my first in Melbourne. He's now a father in his own right but he has a made in PNG.
Thank you for the photo. It especially reminds me of how tropical beaches have jungle right down to the water and are not the desolate expanses of sand and wind we have to put up with Down South. I'm not a huge fan of Aussie beaches white sand or no white sand.

PS Fancy them finding the money to pave the Observatory road. Was it a gift from Japan? They have had a long connection with the observatory, even developed the site originally.
Looks like a peaceful place to sit and relax and read a book.

So glad to hear from you again. Rapopo is on Catholic owned land along with most of Takubar. The plantation folded back in 2001/2 and land was leased so the resort could be built. the resort is building again on a block on the airport side of the present set up.
I am a teacher working part-time but Mr Non-Blogger isn't.
Not sure who sealed the Observatory road - and I'm not sure when it was sealed before or after 1994 - a lot of aid money has poured into the area.

ReplyDeleteNow this really takes me back! There used to be a Yacht Club here on this beach back in the '60's and this is where I used to spend every Sunday swimming, sailing and water-skiing. In fact this is where I learnt to sail and water ski. In the early '80's I used to scuba dive these waters, and no, Karlis, there were no sharks to speak of. Only tiny reef sharks that were too well fed to worry about humans.
