The building of the Bung

The old market (bung) is falling down around our ears so thanks to the Gazelle Restoration Authority and finance from the World Bank, a new market is being built across the road. It is looking quite spectacular so I went for a closer look.

When you take photos of people working here you cause total chaos, so what with the calling out and the waving, I left before all worked stopped! People assume you are a tourist and call out Ples belong yu we?” Which literally means “Place belong you where” or “Where do you come from?”

I went back on Sunday when it was quieter and the workers had gone, and took more photos. I will go back and photograph it when it is finished and in operation.

  1. A few years back I had the opportunity to tour the World Bank facilities in Washington DC. At the time there was abstract talk about the projects which they help fund ... Your photo makes the concept less abstract.

  3. Jules, A really nicely designed building.

Per you comment on my blog 22 to 30 degrees Celsius equates to about 71 to 86 degrees Farenheit. The weatherman tells us we can expect a LOW tonight around 85 -- that's hot even for this steamy climate.

  5. That's going to be a big market. How did you learn the language? It sounds so difficult.

  6. Interesting photos and commentary. I think it's wonderful when people are chuffed about having their photos taken! (I've been reading Denton's blog--did I use chuffed correctly?;=)

  7. The roof and the supports are just great. I like the look of markets from around the world, here in the UK we used to have great markets. Now most of the stuff sold is shoddy, or counterfeit goods at knock down prices. Farmers Markets are the thing now over here, local farmers selling there wares and goods. It's nice to see the vegetables still wearing the soil they grew in.

  8. Nice photo. I like the idea too of a central market place like this. It must be totally different for anyone shopping in a different country. It will be interesting to see what it looks like when finished.
