This
haus kuk (house cook – kitchen) belongs to a family who live on the Kerevat/Kokopo road.
The kitchen is separate from the house to keep the smoke and heat from the open fires away.

The chicken coop is attached so it's not far to walk for an egg for breakfast!!!
Nice photographs and the story with them is interesting.
ReplyDeleteVery nice shots ... so they just take a little walk and grab eggs for breakfast or a chicken for dinner?
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely place to cook dinner, Jules.
ReplyDeleteI want a whisk broom like that one!
Can you train young Benson to pop across to pick up the fresh eggs each morning.
ReplyDeleteYou could run a monthly account.
And, - Dive's right. Those brooms are superlative !
Hi Jules, I haven't visited for awhile, but I'm glad I stopped again. The top photo is picture perfect!
ReplyDeleteGreat post with same very nice photos.
ReplyDeleteI went on a house tour of Charleston South Carolina a while back and one of the things they mentioned was that in times past it was a common practice to have the kitchen in a seperate building ... Also, a co-worker mentioned that he remembers as a child, at his grandparents, he could see the chickens under the house ... my point ... I guess that there are often common practices around the world sometimes separated by generations in time ... Lovely photos. I especially like the broom.
ReplyDeleteBamboo at its best...
ReplyDeleteGood to know you are back on deck Jules, hopefully all over your lurgy. I could almost smell the sulphur in your photo from the other day. I agree with denton's comments on your kitchen post....as you know Jules, in the early days on Sydney, the kitchen was a separate building out the back.Lots of similar things going on all over our world...as Blogtrotta says " the world's not as big as you think"...or something like that!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great read! I sure enjoyed this today. Nice photos!

ReplyDeleteNice photos. I hope no one is allergic to those feathers being that close. I always think about allergies since I have problems with them. I have been getting shots for about six years now.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness...this makes me feel so humble....
ReplyDeleteYou have another award on my site love...
Hi Jules, I’m back after a short break… and glad to see that you seem to be definitely ok, posting and commenting! It's amazing what I'm learning on PNG here, but the «walk on the wild side» is nothing I would like to experience.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
Blogtrotter
some very nicely captured shots!
ReplyDeleteBelieve it or not, I lived in a house very much like that for several years in Papua, across the border.
