Faces

'
My daughters and two friends are still visiting, so we have been off each day doing lots of touristy things. That is why I have been unable to visit many of you - four teenage girls are keeping me very busy!!

The other afternoon, I managed to organise a short dance by one of the Bainings dancers (see November 21 post) - the guy in the very, very tall mask. I took lots of photos but you have already seen them so I decided to post photos I took of some of the people who were waiting for the dancers to arrive. This group was formed of women of all ages who chanted and beat a stick on a block of wood to keep the beat for the dancer.

The dancer worked his way around this small group during the ceremony so I was unable to take close-ups of them while they were chanting. But as I watched them, it was obvious by their ages that this was a stunning example of how the traditions are passed on.

The baby watched wide eyed, the little girl joined in when she could as the younger women and
the older one lead the group, familiar with the words and the beat.

All of the portraits are wonderful! Each one gives an idea of the personality of each.

That's the way I learned to do many things too, watching my foremothers. What are those four girls you're showing around learning from you I wonder? How to be a gracious hostess perhaps?

I love the four ages, Jules. Very powerful (especially to an oldie like me).

Loved each photo of yours Jules. Sure the girls are enjoying having a tourist guide like you. By the photos you show, one can tell you know a lot about that amazing island.

Really nice set of portraits. I don't suppose these are all related? Nice anyway.

Portraits are hard to do well on a blog, but these are relaxed and expressive. The subjects have so obviously enjoyed participating.

Nice shots, indeed. I hope the girls are ripping the place up ? You must have your hands FULL !

Really thoughtful...wonder what they're thinking?.....

It is great that you can see so many of these traditional dances and rituals. Modern cultures seem pretty removed --a little bit sterile (or modernized/ glammed up) by comparison

four teenaged girls? I would want a nap.

I might have snow in my part of the world but you have some awesome things in yours as well!!

Hi Jules, We don't get much snow in Arkansas. We consider ourselves very lucky when we do. Everyone has a party when it snows.

Beautiful faces! Enjoy their visit, how fun!
I thought of you this w.e.: the new Oceanic Art galleries are opened at the Met. So many pieces reminded me of your pictures.
