This lady was lighting her pipe with a stick from the fire, while waiting to sell her bilums and shell necklaces at the Japanese Barge Tunnel, on the Rabaul/Kokopo Road last week.

"I was simply restless, quite likely because of a dissatisfaction with the recent trajectory of my life, and if there is a better, more compelling reason for dropping everything and moving to the end of the world, I don't know what is."

What does it smell?
yeah, what's she smoking.. tobacco?
therese - it didn't really smell from where I was. it wasn't really burning much at that stage.
ancient one - yes I assume tobacco - it is grown around here.
The minute I looked at your picture Bob Marley came to my mind, but I think their smoking habits are a bit different... :-)
The pipe is just great!
I love those photos!
Thank you for adding the link to my blog, Jules! :-)
Simple life...hard life...simple pleasures. Thanks for the reminder of how Very fortunate we are...Hope you're being safe there Sweetheart!!!hughugs
Sort of looks like Popeye smoking. Great shot.
Photowannabe - you are so right thanks!! I kept trying to think of what it reminded me of!!
donna - so true
JM - is it the hair or the pipe???
What a character she is. Great portrait, Jules.
I laughed at your comment on Menton about hair blowing in the wind!
That's a cool pipe, Jules!
And I love her appropriately fire-coloured dress.
Very interesting pipe. Dainty too. Might actually sell well globally among female urbanites who smoke pipes.
I just watched a TV special from the travel channel about the indigenous people of your island.....wow.....besides bugs apparently you have to worry about being cursed as well! Lovely place to visit from here! Hope all is well with you and yours!
c'est un très beau portrait que tu as fait.
is a beautiful portrait that you did.
I know it sounds dumb as in DUH but I wonder what Zippo means to these ladies? It is one of those things everyone needed at one time but now I never see one. Of course I seldom, if ever, see anyone smoking anything. I do see some mothers and fathers with kids in stores and smoke is pouring out of the father's ears.
I published a post about squirrels and other animals and some of the problems they have. I hope you can take the time to read it. That animals suffer and we do not seem to notice seems so sad. Look at my Dances on Sunshine
Bonsoir Jules !
Elles sont toujours très belles Tes photos !
Je demande comme Thérèse : que respire-t-il ?

A summer love is beautiful
But it's not enough
To satisfy emotions
That are shared between us
A winter love is cozy
But I need so much more
It just intensifies my wants
To have a love that endures
