Happenings around town.
A few ex-Rabaulites and Kokopuddlians have asked to see more pictures of the road works happening around the place. So I went around yesterday to catch a few. The weather is very dry and incredibly windy so I had to dash back to the car when the dust blew up.
The new Post Office is taking ages to build but is finally getting there. It is across from Brian Bell, where the sport's field was. This is to be a new commercial area and all the roads around it are new.
I am standing on the Brian Bell corner looking towards Anderson's. The new Bank South Pacific is on the left. - where Rabtrads used to be and the new round-about is in front of me.
This is behind Andersons looking towards the market with Air Nuigini on the left. This was just pot-hole heaven. My little car needed planks to cross some of them they were that big!!
I am standing on Anderson's corner looking at the Fire Station. The new round-about here is taking forever it seems. There have been concerns that it may be too tight for the fire engine to fit around.If you are interested I can do more!!!!

Wow! It all looks so modern! And now I see that they are left-side drivers too. It's good to get that infrastructure in while the money is there. Very interesting.

Jules, as you know each Blogger page template is a bit different, but Sally in Sydney might help you...she's canny.
What I do is open "edit html" immediately after adding the picture in Blogger "New Posting". I click the "edit html" and find a place where it mentions Width and Height it may say Width 400 and Height 300. Change those to 640 and to 480. Further on you may se an s400. Change that to 640 and then click the "Compose" tag. Picture will resize to 640 x 480.
If you can only see s400 just change that to s640.
Seeing all of this development would be a monumental shock to all the Japanese and Americans and others who were there during the war.

daniuel - yes it is noisy but it is the road detours that last for up to 12 mths that are driving us crazy!!

Hello Jules, I see the road work is in a good pace.
Bringing modern comfort is important but as Neva said, I hope people manage to preserve all those beautiful landscapes you show here.
It is all coming along so well! Very modern, not what I expected! Thank you for the great perspectives - you provide a good "feel" for where things are!

Long time no visit but I've been quietly dropping in from time to time. Wow does Kokopo look so different from when I was last there; think 1970. It's so denuded, no trees. I also saw your picture of Tovarua. It seems to be of the exact spot used to loll after an innings on the reef wall. How little things have changed there!
And yes, the new buildings are so 21st Century when in my minds eye everything was tropical post war architecture.
I often think of you and your family and wish you all well in what may be frustrating from time to time.
I live in the Gazelle of the 50's and 60's, a truly Golden Age.

I am very interested. I'd like to see what the whole area looks like --it's nice to show a detail and then step back and show the whole block where it came from (this is an idea I thought I'd try on my blog) but I haven't done it yet.

Great photos Jules. Like Pia, I am remembering how it looked from the '50's to 70's although my most recent visit in 04 was an eye-opener. Could you chat up the local helicopter guy and get an aerial photo of the town?? It would be a great help
