A hat for Melbourne Cup

While we were eating breakfast on the deck on Sunday this lady walked along the beach with a box on her head to keep the sun away.

I felt that this photo was a good metaphor for a couple of things. Today is Melbourne Cup Race Day and in Australia thousands of people have bought and made fabulous hats to wear to the Cup and to parties all over the country. I am off to the Rabaul Hotel for lunch today in my hat, where we will celebrate and think of home!!!

It is also a metaphor for how I feel at the moment!!! Last night I was unable to visit anyone because - yes - you guessed it - phone lines!!! I went to bed in utter disgust and thought I really can't do this anymore. A lot of the time I can't get on at all and when I do it is taking me 3 hours a day to post and visit. He-Who-Doesn't-Blog talked me out of throwing in the towel, so at the moment we are trying to think of a way to continue in these circumstances!!!

A thought is to post one day and visit the next, so I will get back to you when I've decided.

Happy Melbourne Cup day to all!!!

Love the photo Jules, I know what you mean about bloging, it seems to take over at times. Whatever way you choose, Im sure it will be the right decision.

I would miss you if you totally stopped...I admire that you keep trying because I get too frustrated when my computer acts up and I can't post....I feel your frustration! I have learned a lot from your blog about where you live (you have BIG bugs where you are!!) Hopefully, the post once -read the next -will work for you....did I mention I like your new picture? I keep thinking it if I haven't said it!

Neat way to think of this photo. Do you have a library that has internet access? Sometimes when mine goes down, I head to the library.

Great pic and love your commentary on it.
I am very often unable to visit everybody as I would like to. So what I found myself doing was visiting one blog and commenting on musltiple blogs visible on the page. And I visit back the week that follows or whenever I can.
I love your blog: it brings exotism and evasion on this side of the globe I am on. But I'd go crazy myself if it took me 3 hours to post something.

The joys of being at the phone lines mercy. I admire your perserverance. How ever you decide , we'll understand but i would hate to see you give it up completely. You have too much good things to say and photos to show.

Good luck with the connection, Jules. It's one thing your paradise island and my stupid village have in common.

And that's a great hat!

One thing about Aussies, Jules, we all know the proper way to celebrate the M/Cup. Some put a bag or two on their heads. Just look at the little girls squeaking around Flemington with their champagne, ripper hats and tight knickers. It's nice to be tight on Cup day. Some of us just go off the rails, literally !

Being 'out of the loop, the last couple of days', means that when you get back in it, your adoring viewers don't always know the pain and sh*t you have had to put up with. Nonetheless you have made the biggest hit round these parts and all your efforts and the huge time demands do NOT go unnoticed. Hang in there. We love what you do for all of us and if you need a break sometimes; just think of that great Aussie expression, "Who Gives a ...."

We just love it.........and you do damn good, lady !!

I love the photo too. Hold on Jules. I'm sure in a couple of years all those problems will have been solved..

It takes time to write (I have a blog in French) and to visit friends. I think I need to visit my friends every other day also.

Love the title - and the photo.

Also appreciate your problem with visiting. I have no connection problems but even so find it takes ages sometimes to load certain blogs.

thanks for comments on Menton. I too liked the black and white photo (with pink) but wasn't sure it represented Menton, with all its colour. It did make the girl stand out tho. Right.

Hope your connection problems sort themselves. Jules, the most important thing is to post, not to comment. We all have the problem of time in that regard.

Jules, there is a way around this, if you did your posts and saved them as drafts, then one of your trusted blogging friends who as broadband could post them for you each night. That way you could use your dial-up time to visit others.

If would be just like when you went away.. a much better solution than lossing you from 'Blog-Land'...
Oh! yes and well done to 'Him who dosn't' for talking sence to 'Her that dose' ;O)

I've enjoyed your blog too since discovering it recently - it must be so frustrating to do this sort of thing on unreliable (understatement!) dial-up. I hope you don't give up completely.

You know, instead of quiting, just blog away, and when ever you get the chance, come into the comment room and say hello to EVERYONE at one time! Who said you HAD to post every day?(you did) Who said you HAD to answer every comment made?(you did) Who said this would turn into a chore instead of somewhere to post your memories! (you did)
You've got beautiful pictures! And beautiful words to go with them! This was started because you wanted to preserve your travels for, well, basically, all time! Well, now they are. Unless you wipe out the blog..(God, don't do that!) I sound like a Mama giving daughter a lecture!! lol lol
Enjoy this time! It will never come again...and those damn phone lines? Grab your hunk of burning love, throw open that back window and bask in that fantastic view you have!!! Know how I know it's there? You showed me!! lol lol Have fun sugar with what ever you decide to do...(you can now tell me to go take a flying leap) lol

Jules, I seem to remember a rule in blogging -- 101.b.c to be exact that says if you mention your hat, you have to post a picture in it.
