"I was simply restless, quite likely because of a dissatisfaction with the recent trajectory of my life, and if there is a better, more compelling reason for dropping everything and moving to the end of the world, I don't know what is."

Honestly, Jules, your photos sometimes could very well have been taken here in the Philippines — like this set. Maybe not in Manila, though, except the last one.
Very beautiful set of photos. Love the window photo, it looked like a painting in frame.
Fantastic idea for a project, Jules, you are quite inspiring me!
Doorways and windows are appealing for reasons unknown to me. Their treatment in Europe appeals for the aesthetic which is hardly the case in your lovely collection. Don't normally consider that Morrison had anything much of value to leave to posterity, but this quote is okay - sans the capital letter.
Great Photos. They teach us so much about a part of the world I would have never seen any other way. I simply love your blog.
The young boy with the telephone book in the earlier post looks so serious.
I’d guess there are no building codes. LOL
Those are great! My favorite is the first one. It makes me think of a treetop dwelling. Like something out of Tarzan.
I loved both your series of photos and the words associated to them.
It is so special to visit this place with you.
Many thanks for your lovely comments!!
Awesome set of photos! The first two are my favourites: I love the rainforest seen through the window and the lady framed by the fantastic patterned wall.
That first shot is fantastic, Jules! Oh, to have a rainforest outside my window … Sigh.
Hi Jules,
To answer your question most buildings in the US and most other developed countries have building codes and things have to be built to standards and specifications. Codes deal with fire and life safety as well as structural issues. In the US the codes keep getting more and more stringent each time there is a disaster that blows buildings down or they fall down during an earth quake.
I of course was joking about your doors as there would only be one of them in the photos that would meet any sort of code in the US and more than likely in Australia or the UK. I would give the builders of the doors you have posted an A+ for being innovative and using what material is on hand.
Here in Alaska you would find much of the same with salvaged materials and not building to any codes. As Alaska develops there are fewer and fewer buildings that are built without following codes. Using salvaged materials would be ok, but they would have to meet standards and believe me the building inspectors would look twice if you are reusing materials.
Take care,
P.S. All the photos are wonderful and they are what keep me comign back for more.
Love the woman crouching there, she's beautiful.
I too love windows and doors. Windows are not always easy to shoot.
Jim Morrison was quite the poet. I assumed he named his band for the Huxley book.
You know, looking at these doors, they do have a earthy beauty to them.
