Croquet anyone?

Yesterday in the late afternoon, I played croquet at my neighbours, who live just down the beach from me. They have friends visiting at the moment from Australia, and we had such a good time. We finished the afternoon with what else but a Pimms on the lawn.

How civilised!!

As I read your post, I thought 'how civilised' and then realised that you had put it yourself. I work for the Army and an officer tried to teach us how to play in our lunch hour , but that was a long time ago

At one time that was played on the big lawn at Pole Bank Hall which you'e have now seen Jule's.

The bottom picture is excellent..

Ah, croquet was one of my neighborhood's favorite games when we were growing up. I don't think anybody around here plays anymore.
Thank you for the glass of tea a the end of the fame!

Yep, that 3rd picture is so-o atmospheric of how I'd imagine croquet and Pimms on the lawn would be!

Some idiot is advertising his T-shirt printing business in my comments page today - the cheek of it. Don't think anti-spam word will help but maybe I should put it on??????

WARNING _ Don't click on the "camiseta personalizada said" message above unless you want some T-shirts printed.

I have never played croquet. In fact I have never even seen it played. It looks fun though. And that iced tea looks very refreshing ;0)

Croquet anyone? That says it all. It has changed a lot but remains the same game. A group called, "The Virginia Reunion" once met in a woods in the village where I was born. Each year, the man who owned the woods, John Hanes, would spruce-up his croquet court and when the reunion group arrived, ladies is large flowing dresses and gentlemen in suits and top hats would play croquet. I thought it was the single thing I would have to do when I grew up. Come back to John's and play croquet. Well, I also watched people take airplane rides from the field behind the woods and wished I could fly. I never did learn how to do that but I did learn how to play croquet like ladies and gentlemen. Your photograph reminds me so much of that time close to 70 years ago when the croquet court was edged with a concrete curb and the field was sand, packed hard by decades of weather and use.

Thanks for your visit to my blog and for your comment there. I do appreciate it a lot.

This is so civilized; the playing of croquet. It was played in the summer Olympics in 1900 and I believe there is a team that plays at the South Pole.
My Pimms has frozen over, I can hear you say !
Thankfully, that won't happen in Rabaul.
Crikey ! You certainly live in a wonderland.

I Did love the comments of Monsieur le Président.

ann - thanks I didn't think of that!!!

abraham - thanks for popping in and leaving all that wonderful information. The surface of our croquet was certainly not the best - uneven thick grass - we really had to belt it!!!!

barb - go dig it out and have a game - it is a good one to play in summer - the most energy you use is drinking the pimms later

m benaut - the Sth Pole - what a hoot - the sticks would need little woolly jackets - n'est ce pas???

The bottom picture is just gorgeous - so evocative of summer and long lazy afternoons... I've never played croquet actually, but it does indeed look very civilised. :)
